We are venture capital investors in the water risk vertical of Climate Adaptation Technology (CAT)
WHY WE EXIST
We play a role in supporting industry and society deal with climate-change-induced water risk by backing early-stage companies.
Within Climate Adaptation, we are investing in early-stage companies who are bringing to market innovations from the Industry 4.0 toolbox to support their clients deal with water quantity and quality risks in our new climate reality. This is our sole focus, and we are honoured to serve as a venture capital partner to young companies coming up in the Climate Adaptation ecosystem.

Climate policy and adaptation advocacy matter, we commend decarb/NetZero efforts, and we welcome collaboration with investors focused on other important climate adaptation verticals (eg: wildfires, extreme temps, etc); however, our Climate Adaptation investment thesis takes into what we believe is the most compelling investment opportunity in climate over the next 10 years, namely, Industry 4.0 solutions that support efforts to prepare-for, adjust-to, and ultimately deal with flooding, sea level rise, scarcity, algal blooms and a long-list of climate-change-induced water-related risks.
Strikingly, water risk – which is different from the “water industry”, remains a blind spot in Climate-tech investing, yet our research has concluded that 58% of all Climate Adaptation Technology (CAT) spending is now directed at water-related risks. Public and private sector spending on technology solutions to manage severe wind risk comes in at number 2 at 17% of all CAT spending.

WHAT WE INVEST IN
We are building a portfolio of companies who understand the role of Industry 4.0 in managing climate-change-induced water risk
We participate in the Seed or Series A rounds of companies with innovations from the Industry 4.0 toolbox that support their clients see, understand and manage the category and probability of climate-change-induced water quantity and/or quality risks.
While some investors may prefer to invest in adaptation infrastructure, hardware, consumables, or process engineering innovations, Mazarine Climate believes the most compelling opportunity is in innovations that 1) produce data of high spatiotemporal resolution, and innovations that 2) consume data for modelling and analytics which can inform strategy to manage the identified water-related risk.

Within Industry 4.0 we bucket innovation into two types:

Innovations that ‘produce’ data
-
In-situ monitoring solutions that generate data in real-time
-
Field instruments and lab services that offer near real-time data
-
Earth Observation (satellite) solutions
-
Drone solutions including aerial, surface, and subsurface

Innovations that ‘consume’ data
-
AI-driven modelling and digital twins
-
Predictive risk management solutions
-
Decision-support software
-
A long-tail of advanced analytics and business intelligence tools that translate raw data into actionable insights and strategy

SECTOR FOCUS
Our portfolio companies might be focused on water-risk, but they are not really in the ‘water industry’
We are particularly bullish on early-stage companies focused on reducing water quantity and quality-related vulnerabilities faced by owners and operators in these sectors.
LINEAR ASSETS
Roads, rail, and pipelines face growing water-related risks, including floods, erosion, saltwater intrusion, sedimentation, freeze-thaw cycles, drought-induced soil shifts, groundwater changes, and wildfire-driven hydrological impacts.

ROADS

RAILWAYS

PIPELINES
COASTAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Ports, harbours, marinas, and coastal assets (constructed and natural) are increasingly at risk due to our changing climate, including; sea level rise, storm surges, saltwater intrusion, algal blooms, and erosion.

PORTS

HARBORS

COASTAL ASSETS
F.I.RE.
Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate (aka, the "FIRE" sector) face significant climate-change-induced water related risks over the coming decade, from atmospheric rivers to sea-level rise, and scarcity to harmful algal blooms.

FINANCE

INSURANCE

REAL ESTATE
POWER GENERATION
Hydro and thermoelectric power generation are facing increasing water quantity and quality risks in our new climate reality, spanning scarcity and droughts, flooding, and impaired source water.

THERMOELECTRIC

HYDROELECTRIC
WHAT WE LOOK FOR
Our criteria for investment is straightforward

Must have a primary focus on climate-change-induced water-related risks

Must leverage innovation from the Industry 4.0 toolbox

Must have an application that addresses the needs/objectives in one of our 4 focus sectors

Must demonstrate a plausible strategy for reaching profitability

Must have booked
>$500,000 in top-line revenue in the last calendar year
OUR CLIMATE ADAPTATION IMPACT
The guiding principles behind our thesis & strategy
We operate in the water risk, within SDG13 (Climate Action) which takes us into the center of global efforts to manage water-related risks relating to are already changed climate.

Our Impact Mandate
-
Mazarine Climate is not just a chequebook; we are passionate about partnering with academia, policy advocacy, non-profits, foundations, and other impact investors to accelerate the democratisation of technology innovations that enable more of humanity the ability to prepare-for, adjust-to, and ultimately deal-with water-risk in our new climate reality.

Water risk goes beyond just 'water'
-
Countries, communities, companies (of all sizes) investors (of all sizes), farmers, and families face health & safety risks, business disruption risks, and economic development risks as result of too-much water, too-little water, and climate-change-induced impairments in lakes, rivers, and coastal marine ecosystems.

-
Of equal importance are risks relating to aquatic biodiveristy loss as a result of too-much water, too-little water, and climate-change-induced impairments in lakes, rivers, and coastal marine ecosystems. Eg: A harmful algal bloom in a lake is more than just a dead fish problem, its ripples right through the local community.
1.
Championing early-stage companies with innovations that address water risks tied to climate change, which naturally has overlap with SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), but also includes many other water risks that are not included in the so-called 'water industry'.
2.
Focusing on Industry 4.0 solutions, as they are the most effective way to enable more of industry and society to manage climate-change-induced water-related risks. You can't manage what you don't measure"
3.
Investing with conviction, leading or co-leading Seed and Series A rounds with participation between $500K and $2M.
4.
Backing global innovation, investing in early-stage companies with a strong vision that may include familiar markets, or more customers further afield.
5.
Syndication with like-minded investors, working alongside those who share our mission and vision.
