Our fund’s second investment went to Bluesonde, a U.S.-based buoy-technology company bringing to market what we believe could become a foundational tool of global water-risk intelligence: a scalable, real-time water-quality monitoring buoy network that operates seamlessly across oceans, freshwater systems, ports, and aquaculture, delivering continuous, high-resolution data where it has historically been sparse, delayed, or cost-prohibitive to obtain.

What makes their buoy unique?
Bluesonde's signature product is a compact buoy platform that collects continuous, high-resolution sensor data on water quality — from pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity and chlorophyll to temperature, location, and more — and streams it live via LTE, satellite, or Bluetooth. Built with solar power, long-life batteries, and patent-pending anti-fouling technology, each buoy is designed for durability even in harsh marine conditions.
What sets Bluesonde apart?
Their mission to democratize water qualtiy data access by offering buoy that's affordable, user-friendly, and deployable at scale, meaning that companies, utilities, aquaculture operators, port authorities — even smaller organizations and communities around the world — can embed continuous water-monitoring into their operations without the need for expensive vessel support or complex infrastructure. Whether it’s ports needing 24/7 environmental awareness, aquafarms hoping to maximize yields under changing ocean conditions, or researchers needing high-resolution data to validate ocean models, Bluesonde’s buoy network offers a plug-and-play monitoring layer to transform how water risk is observed and managed.
The founding team
Bluesonde’s founding team combines deep hardware and systems engineering pedigree with a commitment to climate resilience. The founders previously worked on ocean-hardware systems for carbon-removal efforts and industrial monitoring; they’ve built multiple generations of sensor buoys and proven long-term reliability even in harsh ocean environments — giving Bluesonde a credible track record as they pivot to broader water-risk and climate-resilience applications.
Why Bluesonde Matters, and why this is a Climate Adaptation play
Floods and droughts dominate most climate adaptation headlines, but water quality risk remains a critical—and often underappreciated—threat. Both marine and freshwater ecosystems are becoming increasingly impaired by rising temperatures and the growing intensity of extreme rainfall, which accelerates nutrient, industrial, and municipal runoff into coastal and fresh ecosystems. In our adaptation economy where data is the core operating currency, Bluesonde delivers real-time, actionable water-quality intelligence that allows owners and operators to anticipate emerging risks rather than react after damage has occurred. For investors and climate-focused funds, Bluesonde represents a foundational infrastructure platform: an enabling technology that supports entire layers of climate-resilient applications, from regulatory compliance and operational risk management to early warning systems, asset protection, and ESG and sustainability reporting.

Bluesonde delivers a compact, solar-powered, real-time water-quality monitoring platform that gives operators continuous visibility into changing aquatic conditions across oceans, freshwater systems, ports, aquaculture sites, and industrial waterways. Its smart buoy network integrates multi-parameter sensors (including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, conductivity, and chlorophyll) with LTE, satellite, and edge communications to stream high-resolution data live to cloud dashboards and APIs. The practical benefit is clear: asset owners, aquaculture operators, researchers, and regulators can shift from periodic sampling to continuous, data-driven decision-making—enabling earlier detection of contamination, ecosystem stress, and operational risk, while improving compliance, productivity, and environmental performance. Mazarine Climate is very bullish on early-stage companies with technology innovation that help owners/operators of marine and freshwater infrastructure, and their consultants, manage water risk in our new climate reality.
